Introduction - Keeping the Archive Alive

Archive Imagery

For posterity, I have created a couple of archive pages which date from my early (pre-2020) photographic phase, mostly in the form of ad-hoc holiday snaps, collages or pictorial mementos of walking trips.

These archive pictures may not be of the best quality technically, but they hopefully serve to remind me that enthusiasm, and a love of our chosen subject matter, is generally more important than fancy techniques and camera specs (not that Iā€™m against combining the two, if the opportunity arises!). Besides, it can be fun to reminisce every once in a whileā€¦

In terms of personal nostalgia, delving into the archives - literally dusting off the old family albums - has enabled me to mentally re-visit the origins of my love of landscape. Some of this vintage imagery, and associated philosophy, has been poured into my illustrated series of ā€˜wildernessā€™ blogs: Camera on the Crags (Scotland), The Ballad of Bellever Tor (Dartmoor), Shadow in the Tin (Isle of Skye) and The Curious Case of Rose and Laurie (Isle of Arran).

Along the way, Iā€™ve re-acquainted myself with some cherished mountain landscapes which I rarely inhabit these days, yet will surely live long in the memoryā€¦ :-)

Hills and History - Summary and Slideshow

My Hills & History page covers a variety of UK-based archive images, presented in two (or more) distinct sectionsā€¦

Firstly, pictures of British mountain or moorland walks shot on film between 1995 and 2006. Some of these ā€˜archaicā€™ images were kindly contributed by my father Nigel, who took the 2001 An Teallach photo shown here (and deserves much of the credit for planning the actual routes!).

The concluding section of my UK archive comprises a gallery of digital photos from 2007 (when I first ā€˜went digitalā€™) to 2020. These were typically taken on family holidays (often to Cornwall or Scotland), on further hill-walking excursions, or occasionally closer to home (in sunny Devon).

As a brief taster, the mini-slideshow presented below features Scottish mountain walks between 1995 and 2019, focusing mostly on the ā€˜early yearsā€™ (as we now regard them!)ā€¦

Boat-Trips and Composites - Summary and Slideshow

My page covering Boat-Trips & Composites opens with pictures taken on cruising holidays which I was lucky enough to enjoy with my wife Karen between 2009 and 2019 (shortly before lockdown intervened).

These voyages include destinations as diverse as the Mediterranean, Greenland, Iceland, Scandinavia (the waterfall shown here is Norwegian), the Baltic, Hebrides, Faroe Islands, the Caribbean, and Canadaā€™s eastern seaboard.

The second section of this page comprises a selection of photo composites or collages from 2014 to 2020, initially recording cruise summaries before concentrating on Devon walks and holidays in Scotland.
